AI's impact on employment raises profound ethical questions about economic justice and human dignity. As AI systems become capable of performing more cognitive and physical labor, significant job displacement seems inevitable. The ethical question isn't whether this is technologically possible—it clearly is—but how we should manage this transition and distribute the costs and benefits.
History offers mixed lessons. Previous technological revolutions did eventually create new jobs to replace displaced ones, but the transition was often painful, especially for workers whose skills became obsolete. By staying informed, making conscious choices, demanding accountability, and participating in governance, each of us contributes to shaping whether AI enhances or undermines human flourishing. The ethical challenges of AI are ultimately challenges about the kind of world we want to live in and our willingness to actively shape that world rather than passively accepting whatever technologists and market forces deliver.
